Hanna Mathilde is the graphic and web designer behind The Wildly Design (and also this site). From Norway, grown up in Bali and Thailand, studied in Australia, and moved over to Jersey a few of years ago. With a Bachelors in Graphic Design and a Masters in Web and Interactive design, she strives to push people’s businesses to look and feel extraordinary and stand out in a crowded market. She loves helping women-led businesses look and feel amazing. Creating an online presence that will grow their tribe and a website into an online home that communicates their purpose, attracts their dream clients and easily sell their product and services.

“Don’t sell yourself short and only work on things that you love."

Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

Growing up with a very creative family that encouraged me from a young age, it has always made me see the possibilities of working for yourself and enjoying life while doing something you love. I knew I was going to do something creative. I loved drawing, creating magazine, collages and websites (started having fun with coding at the age of 11). Graphic design was my calling and after I finished my Masters in Web design I worked at different agencies, but I didn't feel like I got to know the clients enough. I wanted to be more creative and have the freedom to choose projects that I was passionate about. Early in my degree I found out that what I really loved doing was creating brand identities. During my masters in digital design, I realised I also wanted to create websites that drove actions that were not just based on looking nice, but that had a purpose and focused on user experience.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

Every day is different, but I believe in a healthy lifestyle with good walks, listening to podcasts, working in a studio with other creators, having a clear to do list and a good project management system like Asana and a client management software like 17hats. I’m a bit of a organiser and I’m the person to ask if you want to know of a good system or program.

What are the best parts about your business?

I get to work for myself wherever I want to and I get to travel by just bringing my laptop and my creative mind. It’s so much fun working with purpose-drive businesses that are truly passionate at what they do.

What has been your greatest struggle as a business owner so far?

I found it really hard when I first started to work at home and by myself. Already suffering with depression and anxiety it was not a good thing being alone. I started working from studios with other creatives and it helped tremendously. It’s so important finding your community and push yourself to meet up with others. Also having a good support network, which I am hoping Creators HQ will bring to everyone that joins.

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

That I am in control of my business and changing my mindset to believing and striving for what I want. If you aren’t happy with something in your business change it. It might sound simple, but I hear so many businesses struggle and most of the time it’s because people set limiting beliefs. If something isn’t working then you need to invest and find out what you should be doing differently.

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

Believe in yourself and what you do. Don’t sell yourself short and only work on things that you love. Start with your ideas and just do it! I think we often wait for someone else to tell us when is the right time. I also don’t recommend investing in a brand identity or website until you create a clear plan for what you want to do with your business. Find your niche marked, do something unique and have fun. When you want to start looking good I have created a logo shop for start-up businesses with customised only sold once brand identities.

What currently inspires you?

Creating this directory and setting up a studio space for local creators! It’s been such an amazing journey and I’ve gotten to know some incredible local talent.
